Online Japanese Carpentry Course through Real Construction⇒www.kickstarter.com/projects/1911438091/online-japanese-carpentry-course-through-real-construction We are building a Japanese carpentry school in France. We will document this entire process with drawings, photos and videos, and make it an online course so that everyone can learn about Japanese carpentry in English through this real construction project. We will use traditional Japanese techniques and construction methods, and use local materials such as wood, stone, and soil to build the most sustainable buildings possible. We hope you enjoy our carpentry learning materials. Let’s enjoy woodworking together!
To everyone saying "Just use a lathe, duh" - this technique was originally used to make the massive round pillars that held up entire Japanese buildings and temples. Good luck finding a lathe large enough for a column over 60 feet long and 5 feet wide...
Very nice craftsmanship and great demo on the path to doing it in a craftsman manner thanks for your informative vid please keep them coming for people like myself who actually get what it is you are actually doing Thanks
The craft is a perfect art. I've learned a lot. I dont think it's possible without a lathe. The planer is so sharp that it slice like a ham cutter. And the marking string and the wood pen. An art needed to preserve. Respect sir
For those who wonder why a lathe isn't used in the video, just read the blurb. The purpose of this video is to show the technique. Whether or not a lathe is used in the actual work (I bet they have to, for large constructions) is beside the point.
Nowadays one can turn telephone poles on a lathe that is large enough, but in ancient Japan architectural carpenters (known as "daiku" in Japanese) would have done it as shown in the video.
It's really amaze me when ever I saw a really talented person in his work u won't believe how many worker in my country don't even knew the worth of thier own hand made pieces for example the maintenance worker of Taj Mahal is the descended of the same family who work there at the time of construction of it and they still use the same methods till now by hand still giving shape of to the stone by hand tools with the accuracy I guess what is good in this is the preservation of both the art and and the artist but I m pretty sure the govt wouldn't even care to recognize their work and pay them respectively
That's a bit like we do it when working 6 meter 300mm×300mm timbers. Except we rip them down the ink lines with a makita circ saw and we dont have one of those nice shaped planes to finish it. Still get pretty good results though. Nice work.
you doing the job by hard way ,i have machine doing every thing you want to do to the timber [ it does not mean i do not i admire what you doing not at all but i admire it very very much , i enjoy every time i watch Japanese wood worker,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
90% of this is hidden in the radiused plane blades (kanna). They show 10 seconds of the plane being sharpened to the diameter of the wood when in reality its the most critical part of the process.
While you could lathe this in two minutes, the surface finish you get by plane is way superior I would guess. Shaving it with the grain brings out the real beauty.
i would argue, On a lathe it takes about 2 min, and u can sand it on the lathe until it will be polished. I love japanese woodworkig but thats a silly way to make a small rod round

It's probably Segi wood, or Cryptomeria, the more planted and used wood in Japan. A soft wood that takes a shiny finish with planner. Note how the planner can cut the hard knots perfectly.

What is the string used for marking the workpiece? What is the name, it looks so convenient, but does the ink ( or the black stain) penetrate deep into the wood? Maybe its not good to use when the surface will not be thicknessed or so?

Hi I need help using this method....
So I have to make a 2" pole, 7' long..
how would you do that with the measurements you're using?

If pillars were "massive" - then probably they made it from whole tree trunks, not squared beams. Shown technique not applicable to whole tree trunk.

Unbelievable that I still want them in the 21st century ?! Great respect.

Good old manual labor! A lost art. Keep on keeping it alive. I used this same process on granite with a 4" angle grinder.
Thank goodness for the lathe! Admirable patience.

I found this amazing. Never seen round timber made by hand. Is the plane purposely made for making round timber? If so, what are these planes called?
Maru Ganna= Round plane
Amazing

This is only basic technique of Japanese carpenter's woodworking.

Much better than made by machine.
I understand how you make the plane fit the round but how did you get the Blade to fit?
Ancient painstaking method, but working good for any sizes. Not need heavy machinery and power equipment.
The Japanese plane can cut even the single cell of wood, then amazingly water tight suruface condition is achieved.

I am impressed of how well you.
May you tell me which is the starting size of the log? 6x6?
